Ancestors
Eileen’s parents Clifford Leslie Cutter (1895-1968) and Adelaide Ida Casaleggi (1902-1979) united two long lines of English/Scottish and Italian ancestors. On the Cutter side the line goes back to Richard Cutter (1620-1693) and his wife Elizabeth Williams (1620-1662) who left Newcastle on Tyne, England, in 1637 and settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Their grandchildren fought in the American Revolution with decedents relocating to Woodbridge, New Jersey, in 1701.
On the Casaleggi side, three families from Genoa make up Eileen’s Italian heritage: Joseph Spinetta (1843-1897) married Louisa Cuneo (1849-1876). Their daughter Annie (1879-1934) married John Casaleggi (1874-1910).
Joseph, Eileen’s great grandfather was born in Genoa and arrived in San Francisco by 1870. John, Eileen’s grandfather, also born in Italy where he was known as Giovanni, arrived in Manhattan in 1885 and married Annie there on July 16, 1892. By 1905 they had moved to Woodbridge.
Except for the captioned images below, the identification of other Cuneo, Spinetta, and Casaleggi relatives in the family’s collection of Cabinet cards is unknown or uncertain.

Eileen’s 2nd great grandfather, William C Cutter (1778-1838), built this farmhouse at the end of the 18th century in Woodbridge, NewJersey. William C Cutter is father of successful clay magnate, Hampton Cutter (1811-1882) who was born in this house. Hampton discovered large deposits of Kaolin clay here on the farm in 1845. He amassed a great fortune shipping clay throughout the US and he exhibited at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.
